Qnergy PowerGen provides reliable power for critical wayside requirements
Prime Power (Remote Off-Grid)
Suitable as a prime power generator for remote off-grid locations where a
standard utility power connection is unavailable and/or too costly. The
PowerGen is capable of cycle charging or running continuously.
Can be used as a backup power system for locations with AC utility power
connection. A transfer switch can signal the PowerGen to start and provide
power during an AC power outage. Unlike some other power generation
technologies (ex: fuel cells), the PowerGen has no start/stop cycle limitations.
Well suited to provide supplemental power to new or existing solar & wind
systems. During periods of insufficient solar or wind production (ex: storms,
winter months), the PowerGen can be signaled to start and provide charging
power. Fueling requirements can be reduced as the PowerGen is only called
Variety of Fuel Sources
Can operate seamlessly with a variety of fuel supplies including propane,
natural gas, ethane, bio-gas, as well as multiple associated gas streams at
differing caloric values.
The PowerGen has few moving parts and no direct contact points that cause
wear and lubrication (no oil changes).
Multiple Output Configurations
By means of its flexible and modular design, the PowerGen can be tailored to
provide a broad range of power output architectures (standard 120/240 VAC,
24/48VDC optional via PIP Interface) to meet the electrical requirements of
each specific site load.
Long & Simple Operating Life
The PowerGen uses advanced combustion capabilities to quietly and efficiently transform fuel into steady, dependable power from 1.2kW to 5.6kW. Unlike
other technologies (ex: fuel cells, generators) there is no reduction in life for
multiple start-stops or continuous operation. Design life for the PowerGen is
conservatively estimated at 80,000 hours.
While demand for mid-range power increases, major Oil and Gas companies were left underserved. Especially in the 500W-2,000W remote power segment.
Qnergy, the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of Stirling energy systems, announces the PG1201 Generator package, designed to provide prime power between 500W to 2,000W, with the industry’s lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
The mid-power range is becoming a cost driver in many applications such as upstream well-pad automation and midstream cathodic protection. PG 1201 covers the need for reliable, low-maintenance, remote power in that range. The PG1201 Total Cost of Ownership is$30per watt over a three year period, which is about 50% of the competition.
Development of the PG1201 was partly funded by the ARPA-E GENSETS (Generators for Small Electrical and Thermal Systems) program. The first public roll-out of the generator package was at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit onJuly 9, 2019, inDenver, Colorado.
PG1201 has undergone months of testing at Qnergy’s manufacturing facility inOgden, Utah. It is now being deployed on beta sites for leading Oil and Gas companies. The PG1201 system complements the larger PG5650, which covers higher power ranges of 2,000W to 6,000W.

Today at the ARPA-E Summit in Denver, Qnergy rolled out PG 1201. A low-maintenance smaller footprint Power Generator for the 1.2kW range. We have tested the system for six months and will start beta testing this month – stay tuned. At the Petroleum show in Calgary, our Canadian distributor OilPro demonstrated CAP3. CAP3 (Compressed Air Pneumatics) replaces methane emission from pneumatic devices with compressed air. The annual U.S. emission reduction potential of CAP3 is about 40 million tons of CO2- equivalent (equivalent to taking 9.5 million cars off the road). Wholehearted thank you for everyone involved!
The Qnergy Applications Engineering Team has created a state-of-the-art test lab that allows the validation of any electronic piece of equipment the scientific mind can think of. This lab is affectionately referred to as “The Dungeon”. In The Dungeon, the Qnergy Team has validated the operation of its PowerGen Stirling engine remote power system on some of the most challenging pieces of electronic equipment used on remote, Oil and Gas industry installations. The most recent success story coming out of The Dungeon is Qnergy has confirmed that the PowerGen effectively and efficiently provides reliable power to many different air compressors for use on Oil and Gas sites that are required to reduce methane emissions. With the government mandates on methane emissions becoming more and more stringent, the Qnergy PowerGen will be ready to provide critical power for the operation of these sites while helping to make our air a little cleaner!
A Qnergy Stirling-Based Power Generator reached 20,000 hours (more than two continuous years) of uninterrupted, maintenance-free operation. About five times longer than conventional generators.
The generator is installed in the IJ & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center in Salt Lake City, Utah (JCC). It uses Qnergy’s proprietary Free-Piston Stirling technology. The same fundamental technology that was recently recognized by NASA as the “the longest running heat engine ever built” (https://www.qnergy.com/stirlingnasa)
“It is symbolic that our generator reached the 20,000 hour mark exactly on Earth Day.” said Ory Zik, Qnergy’s CEO. “It reflects our commitment to help customers mitigate their GHG emissions in addition to reducing operating costs.” He added. “We have built hundreds of additional units that have the same design principles and thus superior reliability”.
